For those that don't know, IPS stands for "In Plane Switching", which describes how the crystals in the LCD move. The cheapo monitors are all TN (Twisted Nematic), and a big problem with them is that the picture changes with the viewing angle. If you have one of those, you know what I mean -- move your head up or down a little and the brightness and contrast changes substantially.

I'm a photographer, so it is important to me to be able to view images on screen accurately, from more than one head position! Kudos to HP for releasing an affordable IPS display!

Simply put, these are probably the best IPS monitors for the price out there. I have now had two of them for a few months and have found them to be excellent monitors overall with great view angle, no ghosting issues, and good color after calibration. The adjustable height and tilt is very nice with the big base providing a stable foundation and the relatively small bevel working out nicely for a dual monitor config. I would have given them 5 stars, however, there is a perceptible color shift from magenta on the left to green on the right, a common problem faced by sub $1,000 IPS monitors. I will say, though, that after using them for a few months I barely notice the color shift even when doing photo editing work, which mostly happens in the middle of the screen, and from my research it appears that many monitors from HP do not have this problem and even on mine one is better than the other.

To sum it up, I would recommend these monitors if you are looking for the benefits of IPS in a sub $500 HD monitor, with great pixel pitch, that is small enough for a dual config to nicely fit on a desk.

Pros:
-Color, sharpness, and clarity are very good. One of the top monitors I have used in all three areas (includes Dell 2209wa, Dell 2007fp, Apple Cinema display, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generations).
-Build quality is great unlike some newer Dells like my school's fleet of Dell P2211h's. Plastic isn't flimsy and you can trust that the monitor won't flip if accidentally knocked.
-Horizontal viewing angles are great. Will easily let you view images up to 60 degrees to either side from perpendicular.
-Monitor is very adjustable and allows for easy viewing regardless of position. It can pivot, swivel, and tilt.
-Monitor works well in portrait mode.
-Small bezel makes for a nice aesthetic.
-Anti-glare works well in my sun-lit environment during the day and fluorescent-lit environment at night.
-Connectivity is great. Functions as a nice USB hub w/ 4 inputs. Displayport cable (as well as DVI and VGA) was included which was very much appreciated.

Cons:
-Anti-glare finish results in "grain" that is is visible when white backgrounds on websites are present. Was always a non-issue for me since I have never used a glossy monitor. The grain in no way abstracts from the image quality of the monitor. It proves to be distracting for individuals who use only glossy monitors that temporarily use my monitor.
-Vertical viewing angles are less than stellar. Perhaps up to 30 degrees of good off-axis viewing. This limits the usefulness of the portrait orientation when monitor is being used by more than 2 people.
-HDMI cable not included (but wasn't expected)

Some final notes:
Overall, this is a fantastic monitor that offers the perfect amount of resolution for this screen size. It is well suited for all computing tasks (multimedia, writing, browsing). Unfortunately, I can't speak to the gaming capabilities of this monitor. Everything is readable to my eyes despite being nearsighted (> -5 diopter) from 3 feet away. The monitor requires some calibration - mainly decreasing brightness (to 30 or less in the dark or 60 or less in the daylight), increased contrast (anywhere from 70 - 75). Looking back, I wish I would have purchased the ZR24W since my desk could have accommodated the larger size. However, at $250, this is an incredible value purchase for any computer user. It easily would have earned 5 stars with better vertical viewing angles and decreased grain.

Also, if you are using VGA - be sure to download the HP Auto-configuration pattern from HP's website. Start the utility and press the auto-calibrate button on the monitor. This increases the monitor's image quality significantly when using a VGA connection.
