I had an old (21 years old) Rain Bird mechanical controller that still worked but did not have the options that todays units have and it started to get a bit noisy. So I looked at many different controllers and read a lot of reviews and kept coming back to the Rain Bird ESP. I love it.
It was very easy to program, the multiple programs allows different zones to run on different schedules and each zone can be on or off in each program. This allows nearly unlimited possibilities for every situation. Being modular you can add a small unit to the main board for more zones very inexpensively. The standard is 4 zones and exactly what I needed.
While this unit has been around for a while, that is because it works and very easy to use.
I highly recommend this unit and the installation could not be more simple. One wire for each zone, the common wire and the a/c adapter. Done!
With the battery back up and removable cover and program unit ... you can even sit in your favorite chair and set up the initial program, then just snap it in place. Although, fully programming it took all of 10 minutes even walking through the user manual. Once you do one zone you see how simple it it is and fly through the others.
The flexibility in programming allows you to be creative, which i find fun. If you want standard days, odd/even, every 2, 3, 4, 5 ... etc days ... this is even easier ... just set run times and you are ready to go.
